Placement: Pathology Department at Black Lion Specialized Hospital Location: Ethiopia Length: 24 months
Ethiopia is Africa’s oldest independent country and is also one of the poorest. Ethiopia is currently engaged in a highly ambitious effort to realign its higher education system in order to contribute more directly to its national strategy for economic growth and poverty reduction. Its achievements over the past five years have been little short of extraordinary. Contributing to the Health Sector is a major priority for the government plans and VSO Ethiopia has identified teaching hospitals as strategic partners to support the realization of national targets in different areas of health. This placement aims to build capacity of the Pathology Department at Black Lion Specialized Hospital; the largest of all the hospitals in Ethiopia. Black Lion hospital offers diagnosis and treatment for approximately 370,000- 400,000 patients a year and is situated at the heart of the capital city.
What does the role involve? The role of the placement is to build the capacity of Pathology department, both to improve current service delivery and also to make full use of new facilities being developed. To do this you will: • teach medical students and residents in pathology • mentor students in a clinical setting • assist the teaching hospital in improving the teaching/learning process • develop and manage research projects • attend referral clinics and lab • supervise research students
Skills, qualifications and experience required You will be a qualified doctor with postgraduate qualifications in pathology and at least 5 years experience as a specialist in pathology at hospital level. You will have previous experience in clinical teaching and project formulation and you will have proven skills in clinical leadership and management. You will be a good communicator with strong interpersonal and networking skills; patience, flexibility and the ability to work with limited resources. You are someone who works with integrity, a positive attitude and has a strong desire to contribute to a national health programme. You will be confident to work independently and supervising other practitioners.
And the rest.... You will be based Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. Addis Ababa is an important administrative centre not only for Ethiopia but also for the whole of Africa. The city provides much for you to do with restaurants, museums, architecture as varied as the city itself. We’ll ask you to commit to 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to our development goals. In return, we’ll provide you with extensive training before your placement and our financial package includes a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country, we'll support you to resettle.
