CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is a global civil society network with over 1,000 members and partners in more one than 100 countries, and a staff of 35 people from over 20 countries. Our mission is to strengthen civil society and citizen action throughout the world. We work for civil society to protect and grow the civic space where people can express and organise themselves. We speak up for civil society when it is threatened, and work to win it more recognition and influence. We research, analyse and convene to generate and share knowledge and take action to strengthen civil society. To achieve impact we communicate, campaign and advocate.
CIVICUS is seeking to recruit a Research Officer to carry out and facilitate research activities and contribute to the development of CIVICUS research priorities and partnerships on civil society issues.
Specific job objectives
- Contribute - including through quantitative and qualitative research, design of methodologies and tools, analysis and drafting - to the implementation of several key CIVICUS research projects and knowledge products on the current and changing state of civil society, including:
- The Civil Society Index-Rapid Assessment country level civil society self-assessments;
- The State of Civil Society annual reports series on the global health and state of civil society;
- The Civil Society Enabling Environment Index on the global state of the enabling environment for civil society;
- National level assessments of the state of the civil society enabling environment
- Other research projects and activities as they arise.
- Support, develop and maintain relationships with key research partners, particularly universities, to achieve CIVICUS 'research goals.
- As part of the research team, help identify key future research priorities for CIVICUS in collaboration with external stakeholders.
- Support the design and management of innovative methods for civil society research activities, and help CIVICUS to remain up to date in understanding trends, innovations and key findings in civil society research.
- Provide research support to other CIVICUS departments and projects by providing knowledge on trends, innovations and key findings in civil society research.
- Contribute to CIVICUS' internal knowledge management processes and systems.
The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications, knowledge, skills and work related experience:
Qualifications and Experience
- Masters Degree in Social Sciences, Political or Development studies, International Relations or a related field.
- 1-3 years' experience working in civil society, preferably in an international context.
Knowledge
- Knowledge and experience of the application of quantitative and qualitative data analysis principles and approaches.
- Knowledge of development and political concepts and theories as they relate to civil society.
- Working knowledge of at least one of Arabic, French or Spanish would be an advantage.
Skills
- Ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative data.
- Research writing and editing skills.
- SPSS usage and computer literacy.
- Problem solving skills.
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Attention to detail.
- Public speaking, presentation and workshop facilitation skills
Desirable
- Previous experience of working in a multi-cultural team would be an advantage.
Location: Johannesburg, South Africa.
Start Date: As soon as possible
Job grade: Paterson, C-Upper
Salary: Market related salary will be offered.
Duration: Initially a 2 year contract will be offered.
