Publish What You Fund has a history of successful, targeted research and advocacy work. We are looking for a talented Research Assistant to support our research and monitoring activities focusing on donor transparency.
Job summary
Detail-oriented, numerate researcher needed for the global campaign on aid transparency. The role involves providing support within the research and monitoring workstream. The successful candidate will assist in particular with the production of the annual Aid Transparency Index, from design through to publication. This will include reviewing the methodology; leading on the data collection process; liaising with campaign partners and donor agencies; collating and checking data and results; drafting analysis for the Index report; and providing inputs into future Index planning.
The Research Assistant will also provide general support for other research and monitoring projects being undertaken by Publish What You Fund. This will include providing analysis of donor organisations and the quality of their aid information for inclusion in advocacy products; contributing to analytical reports; and designing tools to facilitate the campaign’s open data work. The role will also involve outreach and networking with the open data and aid effectiveness communities. Some travel within Europe may be required.
Roles and responsibilities
Assist with the production of the annual Aid Transparency Index
Provide inputs into the design and oversee management of the Index data collection tool.
Lead on data collection for the Aid Transparency Index.
Liaise with campaign partners and donor agencies to check and agree dataset.
Oversee data collection quality control and consistency, ensuring that the data is complete, standardised and of a high quality.
Contribute to data analysis and draft text on results, individual donor performance and interesting findings from the dataset for inclusion in the Index, donor briefs and communications material.
Provide inputs into the Index methodology, including lessons learned and planning for future years.
Provide support with production process of Index, including assisting with fact checking, editing and proof-reading.
Provide general research support to the Research and Monitoring workstream
Provide ad hoc research support for other projects being delivered under the Research and Monitoring workstream.
Provide inputs to internal briefings on specific donor agencies and the quality of their aid information or findings from the Aid Transparency Index.
Provide inputs to press and communications materials as requested, particularly where specific examples or analysis are required relating to aid information.
Conduct analysis of donor data published to the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI).
Support the Research Officer with the design and testing of tools to facilitate the campaign’s open data work.
Outreach and networking with the open data, open government and aid effectiveness communities
Follow the work being undertaken by open data, open government and aid effectiveness experts and contribute to discussions and consultations being undertaken by these communities.
Facilitate access to and use of aid data by key campaign partners and other organisations.
Represent Publish What You Fund at meetings, workshops and conferences focusing on open data, aid effectiveness and transparency.
Reach out to and network with individuals and organisations that are conducting research and/or designing open data tools.
Essential experience
Basic understanding of aid projects, donor agencies and how they operate.
Good at handling detailed data, with understanding of the importance of data collection processes and quality control.
High level of IT literacy, including experience of using excel spreadsheets and working with large data sets.
Clear and concise writing style, including confidence in relating research findings and statistical analysis.
Confidence and fluency when interacting with a range of internal and external stakeholders – especially when giving advice or feedback and presenting ideas.
Ability to plan, manage and implement projects, including identifying possible risks and troubleshooting problems in a timely and professional manner.
Patient and persistent approach to planning and managing projects and tasks.
The ability to take initiative and manage, prioritise and deliver multiple, complex projects to tight deadlines.
Desirable experience
Experience of primary data collection and data analysis.
Experience of conducting data sensitivity analysis.
Experience of designing web-based applications and coding.
Experience of planning, hosting and presenting at public events.
