As the newest country in the world, South Sudan is working hard to develop the infrastructure needed to provide education to the 51% of the population who is under 18. Despite this, only 27% of the population over 15 is literate. South Sudan has a shortage of teachers and those who are teachers have very little opportunity for adequate training and professional development. This is an exciting opportunity to work with the Ministry of Education and Instruction (MOGEI) to support the Examination Secretariat as they develop standard examination and assessment systems for South Sudan. The Education Assessment Adviser will enhance the capacity of the Examination Secretariat.
What does the role involve? This role will work closely to support the Secretary General who aims to implement plans for the Examination Secretariat’s development. You will be required to:
• work closely as a counterpart to Section Directors to enhance their professional knowledge and skills in the area of Examination and Assessment • assist Section Directors as they review, evaluate, and where appropriate, introduce improved working practices • support Section Directors as they improve the skills, knowledge and performance of their staff and external question setters, examiners and markers • help the Secretariat to progress the establishment of an Examinations Council.
Skills, qualifications and experience required You’ll have at least a degree qualification, with practical experience as an examiner, marker or moderator of examinations. You will have up to date knowledge of assessment and examination practices, plus experience in management, ideally coaching and mentoring others. You’ll have excellent communication skills, the ability to use a range of IT packages, plus the ability to build strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders. You’ll be culturally sensitive, flexible and patient, with an ability to build and maintain good working relationships within the local and wider community. You’ll be a self-starter and able to work with limited resources.
And the rest.... You’ll be based in Juba, the capital of South Sudan. Juba is currently being transformed to a modern city with wide tarmac highways under construction, numerous hotels with all comforts, banks, many National and State ministries and commissions, a busy financial centre ("Juba town") and a bigger commercial centre (Malakia/Konyo Konyo). We’ll ask you to commit 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to development goals and in return we’ll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance.
