The CMPB Division contributes to sustainable peace through the improved management of conflicts and provision of security by stakeholders. It supports gender sensitive policy development and implementation, capacity building and research, and analysis in the area of conflict management and peace building. The division has a large capacity building component that conducts, for example, pre-deployment peacekeeping training; training on how to cope with humanitarian emergencies; gender-specific training; and capacity building to strengthen CSO and parliamentarians’ participation in, and oversight of, the security sector. The division increases awareness among stakeholders through relevant and timely research, analysis, and policy dialogues on topical issues related to peacekeeping and peace building, maritime security, security sector reform and gender, peace and security.
The division works in the following thematic areas:
Area 1: Conflict management and peace building
Area 2: Training for Peace
Area 3: Security sector reform and governance
Area 4: Gender, peace and security
Area 5: Maritime security
The researcher will work with the Senior Research Fellow in the Conflict Management and Peacebuilding Division Head based in Pretoria predominantly on areas 1, 3 and 4. The successful candidate will have good research, analysis, writing and communication skills. He/She will be knowledgeable on SSR, Peacebuilding and Gender Peace and Security in Africa.
Requirements:
A Masters degree in International Relations, Conflict Resolution, African politics, Gender Studies or a relevant field, is desirable;
At least 3 years relevant work experience within a policy, politics, research or professional environment;
Excellent research and writing skills, a record of relevant publications;
Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in cooperation with governments and civil society;
Excellent English language skills, both written and verbal;
Fluency in French and/or Portuguese will be an advantage;
Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines;
Willingness to travel extensively throughout Africa.
Salary: Internationally competitive salary offered. The length of the contract will be for two years and will be renewable subject to future funding.
