Placement: Functional Youth Literacy and Core Skills Programme Facilitator Location: Uganda Length: 24 months Start: Feb 2013
In 2006, Northern Uganda emerged from a prolonged period of intense conflict. Despite positive economic growth, millions of Ugandans live in absolute poverty. To encourage skill development and help the country prosper, the Northern Ugandan Youth Development Centre (NUYDC) has established a literacy training programme to develop the communication skills of the youth in the area. Working as a Youth Literacy and Skills Facilitator, you will provide programme management support and help to recruit and train literacy tutors to meet the programme objectives.
What does the role involve? • Assessing, developing and implementing the literacy pilot project • Responsible for rolling out the programme across other districts in Uganda • Providing project management support for the literacy program including stakeholder communication, data management and monitoring and evaluation policy and procedures • Working with key stakeholders to sensitise local communities on the programme benefits • Recruiting and training youth literacy teachers.
Skills, qualifications and experience required A relevant degree in the field of teaching or vocational training, plus a minimum of three years working experience in literacy is essential. You should have practical literacy teaching experience working with young adults and small groups, with emphasis on lesson planning, communication skills and monitoring/evaluation of learning development. Experience of working in local government would also be beneficial. You will need to be self-motivated and well-organised, with the confidence to create positive relationships in diverse cultures and working environments. You will need strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage your own workload without supervision.
And the rest.... During your placement you’ll be based in Gulu, working with other NYUDC volunteers. We’ll ask you to commit to 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to our development goals.. In return, we’ll give you comprehensive financial, personal and professional support. Where we’ll provide you with extensive training before your placement, and our financial package includes a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation, insurance and more. When you return to your home country, we'll support you to resettle.
