The Consultancy
IDLO is currently undertaking various activities under the project Developing Legal Education and Training Institutions in Southern Sudan. The purpose of the Project is to strengthen higher legal education in South Sudan through support to the College of Law, University of Juba.
As part of the efforts to address the paucity of legal resources, IDLO will assist law professors in developing new textbooks in core law courses offered at the College of Law. This is intended to add professionalism as well as bring uniformity to law teaching at the College of Law, University of Juba. IDLO is seeking to engage three (3) Textbook Experts to work closely with law professors at the College of Law, University of Juba to develop textbooks in core law courses. The text-books will be developed for the following courses – criminal law, criminal procedure, civil procedure, constitutional law, evidence law, customary law, land law, human rights law and labour law. The Textbook Experts will be responsible for the following: • Engaging and training the law professors in the organization of textbook content; authorial style; ethics of textbook authorship; managing drafts, revisions, length and schedule; trends and models in textbook publishing, etc; • Assisting the law professors compile and collate materials in preparation of textbooks; and • Overseeing the progress in the development of the textbooks by the law professors. The assignment shall be undertaken for the larger part in Juba, South Sudan. The Experts will report to the IDLO Country Director in South Sudan and work closely with the Legal Education & Training Advisor. The assignment will last 45 to 60 days. The Candidates should be available to start immediately.

Ideal Candidate Profile & Minimum Requirements
The Textbook Experts should possess an advanced university degree in law preferably at the level of PhD. The successful candidates should have attained the rank of associate professor of law; the attainment of such a position at an African university is an added advantage. The ideal experts should have excellent record of academic publication, especially in law textbooks, and have teaching or practical expertise in the core law courses indicated. Broad-based experience in or proven knowledge of common law legal systems is required. Experience in developing textbooks for law schools in a developing country and/or transitional society would be an added advantage. Having worked in East Africa or in common law jurisdictions in Africa is preferred. Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
