2013 Winter/Spring and Summer Interns - Business Call to Action (BCtA)

Launched in 2008, the Business Call to Action (BCtA) is a global membership platform that encourages private sector companies to develop innovative business models that combine profitability with development impact, in support of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
BCtA members are market leaders and innovators, committed to developing commercially-viable business ventures that engage people living at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) as consumers, producers, suppliers, and distributors of goods and services. In more than 40 countries, business leaders are spearheading efforts to provide the poor with the tools and resources they need to succeed by promoting economic opportunity.
BCtA provides a leadership platform for companies to demonstrate their commitment to development, and access global expertise on innovation at the BoP. Members benefit from:
  • Recognition as part of a high-visibility leadership platform, including association with the UN brand and possible international speaking engagements
  • Access to a global knowledge network on inclusive business models and communities of practice;
  • Partnerships with development agencies, international organizations, and other companies;
  • Collection and dissemination of results, including within the UN Network, from inclusive business models.
BCtA is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which hosts the BCtA Secretariat, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the US Agency for International Development (USAID) the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), and the International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF).
BCtA is looking to hire two (2) interns for the Winter/Spring and Summer of 2013. The ideal candidate will be available for a minimum of 2-3 days/15 hours per week.

Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates are encouraged to apply by the area of interest and previous experience. Business Call to Action (BCtA) is looking for qualified candidate in the following areas:
 Communications:
The intern will support the implementation of the BCtA’s communications strategy to promote public and media outreach.
Member Engagement:
The intern will support the implementation of the BCtA’s outreach strategy to engage current members companies and attract prospective member companies.
Summary of Key Functions:
Communications:
  • Provide research, writing and editing support for press releases, and other communications materials related to developing inclusive markets and business impact in achieving the MDGs;
  •  Monitor and provide updates on trends, news and events in international development, particularly the private sector’s role in development; 
  •  Research appropriate media outlets and assist with press outreach;
  • Assist with updates of marketing material (InDesign);
  •  Support social media outreach, updating Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn on a regular basis;
  •  Provide administrative support on an as-needed basis;
  • Other relevant tasks as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
Member Engagement:
  • Assist with research on ethical performance for the potential member companies;
  • Develop and maintain member welcome packet for new members;
  • Maintain a news alert system for information relevant to inclusive business and current and prospective member companies;
  • Compile and summarize relevant reports and development in inclusive business;
  • Assist with data collection related to member results reporting;
  •  Provide administrative support on an as-needed basis;
  •  Other relevant tasks as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
 

Competencies

  • Excellent writing skills, as well as strong analytical aptitude and strong communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational, time management and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work flexibly and meet tight deadlines;
  • Attention to details and proven ability to work independently and effectively with minimum supervision;
  • Networking skills to engage with key internal and external partners;
  • Theoretical and practical understanding of the role of private sector in development;
  • Computer proficiency: MS Office;
  • Language requirements: Fluent in both written and spoken English. Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.

    Required Skills and Experience

    Eligibility:
    • Currently enrolled in Master’s or PhD degree in business administration, communications, international relations, political science, journalism, or development related fields.
    • Available for working for a period of 3-6 months in the winter/spring (January-May) or summer (May-October) of 2013. (Applicants available for six months are preferred. Applicants must state their availability).
    • Applicants must indicate if applying for Communications or Member Engagement position.  
    • To apply attach your current resume and letter of motivation.
    The successful candidate will be required to:
    • Duly completed UNDP Internship Application form.
    • Copy of updated CV/resume.
    • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme (and graduation date).
    • Copy of school transcript.
    • Letter of endorsement from a senior faculty member who has directly supervised the student in the recent past and who is fully acquainted with the student's performance.
    • A brief paper setting out the reasons why he/she is seeking an internship with UNDP and what is expected from the experience.
    • Copy of the passport and the applicable visa.
    • Applicants applying for Communications position must provide two writing samples in the format of 1) press release and 2) short article, or blog.
    • A Medical Certificate of Good Health from a recognized physician. If the intern is expected to travel outside the country of their residence, other than to Europe and North America, the physician must indicate whether he/she is fit to travel and has had the required inoculations for the country or countries to which the intern is to travel.
    • Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location(s) in which the internship will be carried out.
        Terms and Conditions:
        As per UNDP regulations, the intern will not receive any monetary compensation for her/his work with UNDP. The intern will work from UNDP’s office in New York.
        Note:

        Candidates that have graduated are not eligible for internship

        Interns’ Expenses:
        • Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. All costs connected with an intern's participation in the Programme must be borne by: the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel (including to and from the office), visas, accommodation, etc.
        Subsequent Employment:
        • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
