BACKGROUND
Australia Awards in Africa (AAA) in an AusAID-funded initiative designed: (i) to equip Africans with the skills and knowledge necessary to influence the economic and social development outcomes of their own countries; and (ii) to build the long-term capacity of African governments to provide a range of essential services, strengthen law and justice systems, improve transparency and achieve reforms to meet their own development challenges, particularly to progress towards their Millennium Development Goals.
THE ROLE
REPORTS TO: Manager of the AAA Australian Hub
DURATION: Commence ASAP to December 2013 with a possible 2 years extension
PURPOSE
The Senior Program Officer (Scholarships) is primarily responsible for facilitating professional, academic and social networking opportunities for AAA scholars. In addition the PRO will monitor institutional support for African scholars, with particular focus on those with disability, undertaking awards under the AusAID funded Australia Awards in Africa (AAA). The Senior Program Officer is responsible for the delivery of on-award services in accordance with GRM’s contracted requirements under the AAA with an appreciation for the host organisation’s contractual obligations to AusAID. The Senior Program Officer represents the GRM- African Studies Association of Australasia and the Pacific partnership and is expected to build positive relationships with scholars, host organisations, institutions and stakeholders. The SPO will also contribute, and where appropriate, participate in post-award reintegration planning and activities.
SELECTION CRITERIA
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in a related field
- Relevant experience in academic networking, particularly with the AFSAAP (African Studies Association of Australasia and the Pacific)
- Demonstrated previous experience in cultivating relationships with appropriate professional associations
- Social networking savvy
- Demonstrated experience in liaising and building relationships with scholarships awardees
- Familiarity in working with monitoring and evaluation frameworks
- Experience in the provision of support services for international students in Australia and/or overseas
- Experience in building cross-cultural relationships with specific reference to African cultures
- Experience of university life and/or time spent living and working internationally, desirable
- Knowledge of AusAID’s Scholarships database, OASIS, desirable
