This one-year Executive Master’s programme has been designed in partnership with the African Union Commission’s Peace and Security Department and is part of the “Africa Peace and Security Program” (APSP) which is a wider institutional partnership between IPSS, the AU and GIZ.
It offers experienced professionals working on African Peace and Security a unique opportunity to acquire a certified and in-depth training while retaining their current positions. It addresses the most pressing issues of African Peace and Security today from a practice-oriented perspective, including conflict dynamics as well as the role of sub-regional and pan-African organizations in creating lasting peace on the continent.
The consultant will lead the evaluation of the curriculum through the preparation, direction and evaluation of an international workshop, to be held in Addis Ababa from 5 to 7 of September 2012.
The consultant will, on the basis of the curriculum and with the materials provided, i. develop the workshop programme and facilitate the workshop discussion on: o the structure, content and teaching methodologies o delivery methods o alignment of course content to goals of the programme and developments in the field o curriculum suitability for commercialization o institutional collaboration and networking opportunities o methods of assessing programme impact on participants work in the field ii. write up a short summary of the workshop proceedings.
Tasks and deliverables
a) Planning the workshop
The consultant will a) propose objectives and expected results for the workshop b) identify critical constraints and critical success factors for the workshop c) propose a workshop schedule d) organise, together with APSP operations team, the logistics of the workshop e) identify important reading materials and distribute them to participants f) propose for each element of the workshop follows an appropriate, dynamic and results-driven methodology (tasks, group work, exchange, input, panel discussions, …)
b) Communications and workshop operations
The consultant will a) propose how to engage participants before the workshop; e.g. through soliciting written expert statements, presentations etc from them; and follow up with participants on their delivery before or at the workshop
c) Workshop report
The consultant will produce a workshop summary report and discuss this with the APSP team on 18th of September.
Deliverables: 1. workshop objectives & expected results, draft and final 2. workshop schedule, draft and final 3. handouts and preparatory reading list for participants 4. a note on the comparison of MPSA with two to four benchmark courses 5. a preparatory report (12 to 20 pages) that lines out his insights from the document analysis (items b to j) 6. a list of preparatory tasks for each of the participants; especially presentations and other inputs to be provided by them 7. draft workshop summary report
Duration: The consultant will receive a daily honorarium for two days of preparation work, three days of facilitation and six days of report compilation, up to a total of eleven working days. Qualification and experience: • PhD degree in Peace and Security studies, Political Science or relevant discipline. • Experience in curriculum review and facilitation. • In-depth knowledge of African Peace and Security issues and African Union Peace and Security instruments. • Knowledge of blended learning approaches and methodologies. • Understanding of and experience with adult learning methodologies.
