DIRECTOR, EXAM DEVELOPMENT

Job Summary

The Director, Exam Development will be responsible for the organization and management of processes and activities necessary to develop CFA and other examinations produced by CFA Institute. These responsibilities include reviewing and revising exam questions, as well as creation of some questions. The primary purpose of the position is to assist in the delivery of complete examinations that are valid and reliable tests of whether candidates have adequately mastered the knowledge, skills, and abilities targeted by the curriculum readings. The position contributes directly to the mission of setting the highest standards of education and to the primary strategic objective of protecting and building the CFA brand. The Director may work with multiple exam writing teams over time, but may focus his/her efforts on one particular team at certain times during an exam development cycle. The position will be headquartered in Charlottesville, VA, or New York, NY, USA, and will report to the Head, CFA Program & Exam Development.

Essential Functions

  • Organize and manage exam development activities:
  • Review and revise examination questions and answers for CFA and other exams produced byCFA Institute; also some question creation
  • Determine the activities and direction necessary to produce exam products
  • Assist in determining exam content
  • Organize and direct exam-related meetings with CFA and other exam teams
  • Identify potential external participants in exam development processes and assist in recruitment and evaluation of participants
  • Apply significant subject matter expertise in several curriculum topic areas in review of exam questions and coaching of writers
  • Provide support in organizing and managing all question development activities
  • Manage relationship with exam teams in the direction necessary to produce exam products
  • Plan exam content and structure
  • Manage the security of the exams
  • Coordinate with curriculum development staff and exam administration staff
  • Represent CFA Institute, the CFA Program, and other educational and testing programs of CFA Institute to external groups, including Societies, candidates, employers, and prep courses

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • CFA charter required
  • Minimum 5 years relevant work experience in investment or academic setting required
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with an emphasis in Investments
  • Education beyond Bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • Work experience as a practicing investment professional, or as an educator at the university/college level, that reflects concrete achievements and advancement preferred
  • Fluency in English required; knowledge of additional languages would be useful
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills including written, verbal, listening, and presentation
  • Experience as a CFA Institute volunteer, especially in CFA Program activities, a plus
  • Ability to use standard office software, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Very high level of organizational and time management skills
  • Flexibility in competently managing competing priorities and changing expectations
  • Knowledge of testing practices and statistics preferred

  • Some weekend/evening work and travel required


Travel Requirements

Some domestic and international travel required; approximately 15-20% of the time
