Uwezo means ‘capability’ in Kiswahili. Uwezo is a four year initiative that aims to improve competencies in literacy and numeracy among children aged 6-16 years old in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, by using an innovative approach to social change that is citizen driven and accountable to the public. Overall Responsibility:
You will be responsible for managing effective communication of Uwezo EA (including the country offices) across different mediums, as well as through the design, writing, production and distribution of communication materials. You will respond in a manner that is clear, timely, and effective, and that projects a positive image of the organization. You will develop and foster high standards of publications and other communication. You will ensure that standards are maintained and quality is kept across Uwezo East Africa.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Develop guidelines for Uwezo East Africa’s communications across different media and formats, and ensure adherence to the Uwezo standards;
2. Manage the website for all three countries, including coordinating Country Content Officers, posting country news, ensuring that the links are functional and creating tags;
3. Write and produce high quality communication materials, and effectively communicate these across key audiences while ensuring that they conform to Uwezo standards and promote the image and objectives of the initiative;
4. Edit materials (papers, briefs, power point presentations, etc) in English and Kiswahili including those from country content officers;
5. Ensure that all Uwezo EA websites (both English and Kiswahili versions) are up to date, accurate, compelling and functional, liaise with website developer and tech support as needed;
6. Learn, develop, coordinate and maintain an effective social media presence for Uwezo EA, including through blogs, Facebook, Twitter and other means as appropriate;
7. Monitor Uwezo East Africa in the media and coordinate efforts across the region;
8. Communicate clearly and in a timely fashion with external audiences, face-to-face, through email and telephone, conferences where appropriate, and other forms;
9. Develop and maintain good links with the media, organise media events, including the Launch of Uwezo East Africa material, press conferences and other engagements with the media;
10. Support country offices to document and publish their work and lessons;
11. Support management in communication and representation needs as needed.
General Responsibilities:
- Conduct occasional research and writing assignments on Uwezo in diverse ways supportive to program goals, including internal learning, policy debates, opinion articles;
- Participate in the Uwezo processes (training, assessment);
- Undertake the activities above in line with the associated budgets and with work plans, in ways that are consistent with Twaweza policies;
- Prepare and submit quality and timely plans, budgets and reports;
- Keep abreast of new ideas and materials in the area of organizational learning, M&E and communications;
- Participate in meetings and sessions as needed;
- Undertake any other lawful tasks as may be assigned by your manager or the Head of Twaweza.
Education, skills and experience
1. Experience in development and/or communications work;
2. A university degree in a relevant field;
3. At least three years’ relevant working experience, specifically in learning/communications;
4. Excellent writing and communication skills in both English and Kiswahili;
5. An eye for detail;
6. Strong analytical and organizational skills;
7. Computer proficiency including web-based applications;
8. Flair for working with visual materials; a powerful creative eye;
9. Keen understanding of traditional media, social media and uses of new technologies for communication in East African context;
10. Ability to be on top of issues and deliver quality on time.
