UN WOMEN: MEDIA SPECIALIST (SPANISH)

Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women will work for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States' priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

The Inter-Governmental Support and Strategic Partnership Bureau is responsible for proactively driving the strategic positioning of UN Women so that the size, sources and predictability of its resources help the organization achieve its strategic goals. A service center to UN Women HQ Sections and Field Offices, the Bureau's Division of Strategic Partnerships, Advocacy, Civil Society, Communications, and Resource Mobilization is organized into three functional clusters: Resource Mobilization, Civil Society, Communications and Advocacy. Given the scope and interrelationships of Division's functional responsibilities, the work of the Bureau is highly synergistic, involving constant and direct interaction and information sharing among team members, to provide high-quality advice, services and support to UN Women.

Under the overall guidance of the Chief, Communications and Advocacy and the direct supervision of the Senior Communications and Media Specialist, and in collaboration with Division colleagues, the Media Specialist (Spanish) is responsible for supporting all media engagements undertaken by the organization, in particular, developing and implementing media relations strategies and managing media/press coverage for UN Women for the Spanish speaking countries. As UN Women's media relation's focal point for Spanish-speaking media, the incumbent builds effective relationships with the media to promote and manage its coverage of UN Women and its strategic areas.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

  1. Supports media/press relations for the organization, especially with Spanish-speaking media;
  2. Provides support to UN Women staff and build internal capacity for outreach and media relations, at all organizational levels;
  3. Provides content in Spanish for the UN Women corporate website;
  4. Supports social media outreach in Spanish;
  5. Supports production of corporate publications and other flagship materials for outreach to diverse audiences.

Supports media/press relations for the organization, especially with Spanish-speaking media, focusing on achieving the following results:

  • Develops close working relations with the media (national, regional and international) to help position UN Women to achieve its strategic goals;
  • Supports enhanced media/press coverage of UN Women and its strategic areas, positions and issues;
  • Supports Spanish-speaking media activities planned and organized for Executive Director's and other senior mangers' travels and appearances, including arrangements for interviews and press conferences;
  • Manages media planning to boost strategic positioning of UN Women with the Spanish speaking media, with a special focus on: corporate advocacy campaigns; launching of UN Women flagship publications; travel and public appearances of UN Women Goodwill Ambassador(s);
  • Supports the organization and coordination of press conferences, and facilitates interviews with senior managers and thematic focal points;
  • Contributes to production of communications materials, including press releases, media advisories, background information, and press/media kits; updates, drafts, disseminates information and stories to inform media, donors and general public of UN Women programming initiatives, results and successes, and other achievements;
  • Identifies creative opportunities to increase media awareness of UN Women, its programmes and projects, especially at the Field Office level; and to strengthen gender sensitivity of media coverage;
  • Provides clear, consistent and timely responses to media inquiries including issuance of statement and corporate positions to media and other external audiences;
  • Expands corporate contacts with media and print journalists, groups, organizations and media outlets (audio, visual, electronic); and identifies topics, background information, news-related developments and coverage of interest to each.
Provides advice and support to UN Women staff and build internal capacity for outreach and media relations, at all organizational levels; focusing on achieving the following results:
  • Works closely with the Communications and Media Specialist, and serves as the focal point at UN Women HQ for communications officers of Spanish- speaking countries, and provides guidance on media planning and placement, developing media campaigns and initiatives; strategies for effective media relations;
  • Advises HQ Sections and Field Offices on media and public outreach in Spanish, also for global advocacy campaigns and launching of flagship and other corporate publications.
Provides content in Spanish for the UN Women corporate website, focusing on achieving the following results:
  • Documents success field stories, in coordination with field offices, for effective outreach to donors, media and other audiences;
  • Write feature stories, incorporating multimedia elements - photos, audio and videos - which accurately reflect the work of the organization in all its programmatic and priority areas;
  • Proofreads Spanish translations for the website and ensure quality control of all Spanish web content;
  • Collaborates effectively with colleagues across Division, build a repository of stories on UN Women partnerships that foster gender equality.
Supports social media outreach in Spanish, focusing on achieving the following results:
  • Works closely with the Social Media Analyst, and supports social media outreach in Spanish through UN Women corporate accounts of Facebook and Twitter, and other social media platforms;
  • Provides creative solution to broaden audience through social media engagement in Spanish.
Supports production of corporate publications, and other flagship materials for outreach to diverse audiences, focusing on achieving the following results:
  • Provides support, as needed, for production of Spanish publications, such as advice on translation, assistance on proofreading;
  • Provides support on distribution planning of corporate outreach publications and materials to field offices, especially to Spanish-speaking countries.

Impact of Results:

The key results have an impact on the Organization's media relations and outreach capacities and consequently the image of UN Women. It is essential to ensure appropriate international/ national press coverage of UN Women programmes, initiatives and events.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Masters degree in communications, journalism, public relations, social sciences, international relations, or a related field.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years relevant experience in communications at the national or international level, including experience in communications and media relations. Work experience on gender issues desired.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English, Spanish (written and oral).

Note: In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
