General: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is an autonomous, non- profit making, international scientific organization operating under the aegis of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). More specifically its mission is:
To encourage, support and undertake activities to improve the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of maize and wheat systems in the interest of the resource poor in developing countries.
The position: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is recruiting a Research Assistant based in Addis Ababa, who will be a member of the CIMMYT team.
MAIN DUTIES (Terms of Reference)
The Research Assistant will provide technical support to the Global Cereal Rust Monitoring System (GCRMS). The GCRMS provides up to date information on important cereal rust diseases via a global surveillance and monitoring network linked to GIS-based information systems. Key duties responsibilities and include:
- Data input, quality control and validation: Primary data of the GCRMS include geo-referenced field survey data, rust pathotype data, molecular diagnostics and trap nursery data. A data management system – “The Wheat Rust Toolbox” – has been established, so oversight and management of this data management system will be a primary responsibility.
- Web content update and development: A web-portal “Rust Spore.org” is being established as a primary information resource for the GCRMS. Content management, updates and development of the web portal will be a primary task. Contribution to web application development would be desirable, but not essential.
- Support and capacity building for national wheat rust surveys. Provision of training in the use of survey tools (GPS, Smartphone survey tool, standard field survey protocols). Some international travel may be required.
- Contributes to publications and presentation materials for the GCRMS
Minimum Requirement:
Education: MSc degree in relevant subject (Agriculture, Biology, Pathology, Information Systems, Geography)
Experience: At least two years working for a relevant organization.
Training: Any training related to GIS, databases, or web development considered highly desirable
Required and desirable skills for the position include:
- A working knowledge of GIS and GPS
- Experience with databases and web content management systems
- Experience with web development and HTML programming, desirable but not essential
- Experience in the use of mobile technologies for data collection, desirable but not essential
- Field surveys
- Innovative, ability to work with minimum supervision
- An interest and willingness to learn about plant pathology
- Good communication skills in written and spoken English
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
Duty Station: Addis Ababa
Grade: Level 2D.
Minimum Gross Salary: Birr 10,710
Terms of appointment: Initial appointment is (fixed term) for two years with the possibility of renewal appointment, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
