Civil Engineering and Geosciences / Architecture
The Faculties of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (CEG) and Architecture are dedicated to internationally leading research and education and have built a strong, international reputation. The CEG Faculty focuses on structural and hydraulic engineering, watermanagement, transport & planning and geotechnology. The Faculty of Architecture focuses on providing a thorough design education for architects and urbanists and also conducts research in diverse scientific areas covering the entire domain of the built environment. In both faculties, innovation and sustainability play a central role. The research takes on issues of worldwide social relevance and is closely interwoven with the education offered.
The Department of Structural Engineering provides education and conducts research in the field of construction for civil infrastructure and buildings. The department has science/fundamentals as its basis (mechanics and materials science), deepened by engineering (concrete, steel, composite, timber, road and railway construction) and broadened by design (integral design, structural design, zero-material design and construction technology).
The Department of Architectural Engineering and Technology is positioned in the arena of design and materialisation and strives for the integration of design and engineering, with attention paid to building technology, structural design, computer science and climate design.
Job description
The chair of Structural Building Design focuses on education and research in structural design, primarily of buildings. The focus will lie on the structural design of the main loadbearing structures, taking into account various aspects such as architecture, building finishing and facades, materials (from canvas to concrete), building physics, construction technology and technical services. Attention will be paid to sustainability and safety aspects such as structural safety, construction safety and fire safety.
The research under the chair's responsibility is strongly focused on structural design and its realisation. The focus is directed towards the areas of Computational Design, Structural Design and Safety, Production Assembly and Technnology, and Special and Complex Structures.
In the bachelor's education, the basics of structural design are covered, with attention given to structural systems, connections, loads and schematisation, structural behaviour, materialisation and dimensioning with the help of rules of thumb.
In the master's education, structural design subjects are dealt with in greater depth, including special structures and high-rise buildings.
The professor must play a coordinating role between both faculties in terms of both academics and management.
