| De uitdaging / The challenge | | The Biomechanical Engineering groups at the University of Twente (UT) and Delft University of Technology (TUD) aim to realize a breakthrough in physically support humans with heavy lifting, by designing a shared-control assistive human-machine device. Most likely, this will be a strong external skeleton that can be easily connected to the arm(s) and potentially the trunk and legs. This device will used in care environments (hospital, rehabilitation centers) to lift patients in and out of bed and in industrial environments to handle heavy, variable loads. This development project is part of larger project named H-Haptics that is funded by the Dutch government. Background
Although many assistive devices exist which can help in moving heavy objects, none are flexible enough to be used without problems in the care industry. Most devices are bulky, limited in lifting loads, unable to handle varying loads, slow in operation, or need extensive training before they can be used. Most suffer from all of these and are therefore mostly ignored by the user. The aim of the project is to show that by using haptic shared control, the force to the operator can be designed based on his/her motion control properties, leading to intuitive more intuitive assistance. For him/her, the devices will need to immediately follow the desired movements of the arm and assist at the moment it is needed.
Team
You will be working in a project team consisting of two PhD's, two engineers and several other scientists at both Univeristy of Twente and Delft University. The team will work in close cooperation in order to exchange ideas on control, actuation, and shared control both within the project and with other H-Haptics projects. |  | | |
Ons aanbod / Our offer | | You will be appointed as a mechatronic engineer. The appointment will be for four years. Depending on your knowledge and experience your salary will range from € 2267 to €3028 gross per month, according to scale 8 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Uw profiel / Your profile | | We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic mechatronic engineer, who is able to offer technical support to the students involved in this project. We expect him to develop, design, outsource the production, and assemble small experimental setups, and to offer support for the PhD student in the design, outsourcing, and assembly of the main project devices. These set ups and devices will consist of both moving mechanics and electric sensing and actuation, thus practical knowledge about these are essential to come to the optimal component selection and system integration. Practical experience in biomechanics, dynamical systems and control engineering is strongly preferred. Outstanding knowledge of English both in speaking and in reading is required.
