The MENTOR Initiative (MENTOR) is a “not for profit”, charitable, non-governmental organisation devoted to reducing death and suffering from malaria in humanitarian crises. The MENTOR Initiative is currently providing ongoing emergency support to the most vulnerable communities in Liberia, Angola, Kenya, Somalia, the Central African Republic and Southern Chad.
MENTOR is currently seeking two (2) qualified laboratory specialists to reinforce and build capacity of the Angolan MoH in malaria microscopy and laboratory differentiation. The individuals selected will be based in Huambo and Zaire/Uige provinces, with extensive travel to rural field sites. As well, the selected individuals may be temporarily seconded to partner organizations in other provinces to provide laboratory support for a temporary period (2-3 months).
Duty Stations: Zaire, Huambo and Uige provinces of Angola. Other provinces and travel may be required. Reporting to: Medical Coordinator– Public Sector Malaria Case Management Start date: February 1st 2012 Duration: 1- Year, with the possibility of extension Fee Structure: 3200 – 3800 USD / month depending on experience; comprehensive insurance; shared accommodation and an annual flight included.
JOB DESCRIPTION : 1. Collaborate with MoH, in particular the “Direcção Provincial de Saúde” (DPS), to assess the laboratory facilities and to identify priorities in order to make recommendations to meet acceptable malaria control standards. 2. Collaborate with MoH, NMCP and the DPS in organizing training courses for technicians working in laboratories of on Malaria laboratory analysis. 3. Establish a regular supervision schedule and an on-the-job technical coaching strategy to integrate and reinforce MoH supervision and monitoring visits to laboratories Providing On-Site coaching. 4. Design and implement Quality Assurance measures in all supported laboratories and collaborate with the DPS in the improvement of the national Quality Assurance program. 5. Liaise with the Ministry of Health central laboratory for monitoring and evaluation and certification of training and relevant materials. 6. Ensure standardized recording and reporting of suspected malaria cases. 7. Assist in designing and leading appropriate operational research where needed, including malariometric surveys and other related areas in agreement with MoH and MENTOR HQ. 8. Assist the programme team as needed to implement technical training workshops in order to reinforce MoH/NGO health personnel technical skills for malaria diagnosis and treatment. 9. Produce timely reporting for all related activities and contribute as needed to all donor reports and other reports and proposals. REQUIREMENTS 1. Fluency in English and at least one of the romantic languages, preferably Portuguese. 2. Trained and educated laboratory technician/medical technologist with minimum of 3 years laboratory experience in microscopy use. 3. Extensive experience of performing laboratory analysis with emphasis on malaria and other tropical diseases. 4. Proven ability to training health personnel through one-on-one coaching or mentoring in microscopy and laboratory related functions. 6. Experience in training health personnel especially, public health laboratory technicians with minimum laboratory experience, knowledge and skills. 7. Experience of developing and maintaining relationships with government and program partners and colleagues from different background and cultures. 8. Flexible approach to managing and prioritizing a workload and multiple tasks in a fast pace environment with tight deadlines. 9. Physically fit and mentally willing to live and work for days/weeks in municipalities with limited facilities and challenging environment. 10. Proven report writing experience. 11. Strong communication skills.
