Kenya Summary:
The purpose of this job is to establish systems and processes for management of laboratory samples that will integrate with the laboratory, field and data management in a multi-investigator research programme on malaria immunology. The key areas for development are good laboratory practice, logistics and planning for laboratory archiving systems, and financial and stock control. The project manager will work closely with the central laboratory management team and the clinical and field based teams to work towards integrating the immunology project with other projects within the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Programme.
REPORTING LINES:
Dual reporting to the head of laboratory services and to a named principal investigator representing the MIP.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Planning and coordinating the activities for sample and data collection from the field and their processing and storage in the laboratory in partnership with investigators in the MIP and the laboratory management team.
- Establishing new systems to facilitate timely and controlled sharing of samples within the MIP, in coordination with our biobank manager.
- Ensuring efficiency and quality of laboratory operations through the curation of standard operating procedures, and cost-effective management of project resources.
- Assessing and coordinating provision of various needs of the laboratory MIP, i.e., information, communication, resources,.
- Coordinating the adoption and implementation by the MIP of laboratory-related approved project operational procedures, policies, and standards in close liaison with the laboratory management team.
- Providing effective proactive liaison with the laboratory management team as necessary to forecast, plan and meet demand for relevant quality, resources and services in the laboratory.
- Ensuring effective and proactive communication across the MIP on performance, operational policies, procedures and services of the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme.
- Coordination of projects by visiting students and collaborators in conjunction with the laboratory management and team and head of training.
- Stock control of consumables in the laboratory
- Reporting of equipment maintenance issues to the laboratory management team.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCE:
Skills and Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant subject (in either project management or a relevant scientific discipline).
Other qualifications and experience:
- Strong record in management of multi-faceted research projects .
- Experience in performing systematic needs analysis of multi component research projects or programmes
- 3 years experience in a similar or related field of work
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Substantial experience in malaria parasite culture.
Desirable experience
- Previous experience of laboratory and or field-based research related to human health
- Experience of working with laboratory information management systems
- Experience of using an enterprise DBMS – especially MySQL
- Post-graduate diploma in project management.
